EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR and how does it work for treating trauma?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a gentle and evidence-based therapy designed to help the brain naturally heal from painful experiences. When a person goes through something deeply distressing, the brain can get overwhelmed, accidentally locking the memory away in its raw, emotional state. This is why certain sights, sounds, or thoughts can suddenly trigger intense emotional distress, making it feel like the past event is happening all over again in the present moment.

EMDR changes this by using rhythmic left-to-right eye movements or gentle taps to stimulate both sides of the brain while you briefly focus on the memory. This process unlocks the stuck experience, allowing your mind to safely digest the information and file it away so it no longer holds power over your daily life.

While widely recognized for treating trauma and PTSD, EMDR is also incredibly effective at calming the intense physical terror of panic attacks. Panic attacks often stem from the body's survival system getting caught in a loop, misinterpreting everyday stress as an immediate threat.

During EMDR sessions, your therapist helps you pinpoint the specific body sensations, negative thoughts, or memories that spark your panic. By using the same rhythmic tracking movements, the therapy retrains your nervous system to realize that you are safe in the current moment.

Over time, this effectively rewires the automatic panic response, taking the sting out of the triggers and restoring a profound sense of peace and control to your everyday life.
